From Humble Beginnings…
Over fifty years ago a courageous young woman travelled by a pearling lugger not once but three times from Fremantle to the Walcott Inlet in the Kimberley’s, each time with a newborn baby clasped protectively to her bosom. A tiny woman by any standards and born in Katanning, the country town in the south west of Western Australia, her one thought was to get back to her beloved husband.

Her home was now MUNJA STATION located on the banks of the Calder River where Elgar Smith was Station Manager looking after cattle and a numerous number of the aboriginal families.

Their three young sons started their lives surrounded by crocodiles, march flies and the isolation from the outside world but most of all surrounded by love, from their parents and their aboriginal peers…

 

  

Now here in Rockingham, the name MUNJA is known as the Award winning Function / Reception Centre located between the cities of Rockingham and Mandurah. This much needed function venue is very much a Smith family concern, being managed by David, a son of Noel and Jo Smith. The name MUNJA is very much a tribute to two incredible people who were not afraid to take up the challenge of going where not too many people would dream of living. Now Jo and Noel Smith reflect this challenge to give the people living in this region a chance to experience the tranquillity of these magnificent gardens and the hospitality of the Smith family…. Remember….
